Examining the Prevalence of Nursing Home Neglect

Last updated 3 months ago

Considering how strong and energetic parents can be while children are growing up, it’s hard to imagine them getting older and living in a nursing home. Unfortunately, this is a fate that awaits many elders—and in some cases, neglect and abuse may be involved. Here is a brief look at the prevalence of nursing home neglect and what you can do about it:

What is nursing home neglect?

Nursing home neglect refers to unprofessional behavior exhibited by nursing home personnel. This type of neglect most often comes in the form of nursing home staff not doing their job, and therefore allowing an elderly resident to suffer without receiving the proper care. In some cases, the nursing staff might even physically abuse or steal from residents.

Who is at risk?

Technically, every elderly person living in a nursing home is at risk for nursing home neglect or abuse. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, somewhere between one and two million Americans over the age of 65 have been abused, exploited, or mistreated—most of them at the hands of nursing home personnel. The elderly, who are physically weak and sometimes easily confused, are very popular targets for these criminals.

How can you stop it?

For every elderly American who reports abuse or neglect, another five cases go unreported. The best thing you can do to put an end to nursing home neglect and abuse is to report it whenever you see it. If your own parent is being neglected, you should immediately hire an attorney in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.
